April, Come She Will!
March 17, 2005
"You need a place to really live! A
place you want to tell others about, not
an Anywhere Suburb, just south of
Anywhere,  USA," says Cherie
McBride. This April, you'll be seeing
Glenn and Cherie McBride trying to
support such a dream with their art
and music.
The couple says that they believe in
the power of "local' as in local
environment, local community, local
culture, local art, local music. "We
have some great history around here,"
says Cherie. "However, we also have
contemporary - immediate things to
protect, promote, nurture and even
grow. If everyone paves over their
home town and natural resources,
what will be left? "
That's why you'll see the McBride's
participating heavily in April's local
culture and wildlife events: Migration
Celebration, April 9 and 10; Artisans in
Nature (Bay City), April 2nd, Mad
Hatter Tea Party (Riverside), April 16,
Astronomy Day (Center for the Arts
and Sciences) April 16 and Artists in
Action (Palacios) April 30. The couple
will also be a part of this Fall's
Hummingbird Extravaganza at the
GCBO in Lake Jackson.
Cherie is getting ready with Gulf Coast
birds and scenes from local life while
Glenn works on this year's
hummingbird music album.

Hummingbird Festival - Tucson, 2005
ROCKDALE, May 16. 2007
Cherie Nowlin McBride won Best of
Show prize at the recent Rockdale,
Texas "Tejas Art and B1ook Festival."
Her entry, "Quintana Blue" took top
honors (a $1000 prize) with it's
rendering of two great blue herons.
The herons were painted in watercolor.
Cherie's technique on heavy
watercolor paper is greatly influenced
by Chinese Brush Painting -
traditionally done on fine rice paper in
China.

"Quintana Blue" was painted from a
series of studies originally
commissioned by a Freeport, Texas
couple who loved seeing "their herons"
every morning wading the wetlands on
the edge of town. The herons were
observed, sketched and photographed
along the wetlands between the Brazos
River bridge on Hwy 36 and the Port of
Freeport. Since the original painting,
Cherie has rendered several great
blue heron scenes, including a glazed
ceramic fireplace mural for a couple
who remodeled their house on San
Bernard River.

This Thursday evening, May 17th,
Cherie will demonstrate her techniques
at "Explore Chinese Culture," the Lake
Jackson Library from 5 to 8pm. It is
part of The Big Read program,
sponsored by the National Endowment
of the Arts. It is for all ages.
